Help
Who can drive
Licence
. A full New Zealand licence, or a full overseas one.
What licence do I need?
Learner, restricted and provisional licences are not accepted. Your licence also has to be valid for the whole rental, so check the expiry date before you book.
Each driver's physical licence is checked at the handover, so bring the card itself rather than a photo of it.
Licence translations
. An official translation from a translator approved by NZTA makes it fine.
My licence is not in English. Can I still hire a car?
An overseas licence has to be in English, or come with that translation. Upload it alongside your licence photos when you book, and bring it with you to the handover.
Extra drivers
. Any driver added to the rental agreement first can take the wheel.
Can someone else drive the car?
Add them when you book, with their licence details and photos, and we sight each physical licence at the handover. Anyone not named on the agreement must not drive the car. There is no charge for adding a driver.
Insurance
. Comprehensive cover with a licensed New Zealand insurer is included.
Is insurance included in the price?
We never charge extra for insurance, and there is no cover to upgrade to. GST, unlimited kilometres within New Zealand and roadside assistance are in the same price.
Insurance is not the same thing as the excess. An excess applies if you have an at-fault incident.
Getting the car
Where we meet you
. Auckland International Airport, the Auckland Domestic Terminal, or our depot at Safe Store Westgate.
Where can you deliver the car?
Delivery is part of the price. There are no airport fees and no premium location fees.
You pick one of those three points when you book, and you can choose a different one for the return.
Pickup times
. Any day, at 6am, 9am, 12pm, 3pm or 6pm.
When can I pick the car up or drop it off?
You choose your time when you book, for both ends of the hire. Someone from Zero meets you, goes over the car with you and hands you the keys.
Those are handover times, not office hours. Our hotline covers roadside assistance and emergencies, and it runs 24 hours a day.
What to bring
. Each driver's physical licence, plus any translation.
What do I need to bring to the handover?
You will already have uploaded licence photos and one proof of address when you booked. At the handover we check the licences against them, you sign the rental agreement, and we record the car's condition together with photos. Take your own photos as well.
Keep a copy of the signed agreement in the car for the whole hire. New Zealand rental law requires it if an enforcement officer asks to see it.
What you pay
Deposit
. No deposit, no bond, and no hold on your card, ever.
Do I need to pay a deposit or a bond?
You pay the full rental price by card on the website when you book. Nothing is taken before your hire and nothing is held during it.
Stripe stores your card details securely, and we never hold your full card number on our own systems. Card is the only payment method we offer.
Charges after the hire
. Only if one of a few listed events happens during your hire.
When can you charge my card after the rental?
Before we take any money, we email or message you with the evidence, such as inspection photos, a repair invoice or an infringement notice. You then have 24 hours to dispute the charge. By signing the rental agreement you authorise us to charge your card for these amounts if they apply.
The excess
. Set per incident on your rental agreement, and only payable if you are at fault.
What is the excess, and when would I pay it?
The exact figure depends on the vehicle, and it is printed on your rental agreement before you drive away.
If you are confirmed not at fault, the excess is waived in full. For that we need the other party's complete details, being their full name, phone number, address, licence, vehicle registration and insurer. Collect them at the scene.
An additional excess applies to drivers under 25, and to drivers who have held a full New Zealand licence for less than a year. It changes nothing about the rental price. Cover can also be void altogether in the situations clause 9 sets out, such as driving over the legal alcohol limit.
Cancelling and changes
. Cancel more than 24 hours before pickup and you get the whole amount back.
Can I cancel or change my booking?
Cancel inside 24 hours, or do not turn up at all, and a 15% cancellation fee applies. The rest is refunded.
Changes depend on availability. Use the booking management link in your confirmation email, or message us.
There is no refund for bringing the car back early. The price covers the period you booked.
During your hire
Fuel
. Bring it back full, or a refuelling charge applies.
Do I need to bring the car back with a full tank?
There is no per-litre rate and no service fee on top. Fill up before you drop the car off and there is nothing to pay.
Keeping it longer
. Ask before you are due back, and it is yours for longer if the car is free.
Can I keep the car for longer?
Ask at least 48 hours before the scheduled return time. Extensions depend on availability, and we may say no if the car is committed to another booking. An approved extension is charged at the rate current at the time, and paid before it starts.
Keeping the car without an approved extension is a late return. That costs an extra day at the daily rate per 24 hours or part of one, plus a late return fee.
Accidents
. Stop somewhere safe and call us on +64 800 800 521. That line runs 24 hours a day.
What do I do if I have an accident or a breakdown?
If a warning light comes on, stop as soon as it is safe and call before driving any further.
After an accident, collect the other party's full name, phone, address, licence, vehicle registration and insurer. Those details are what waives your excess if you are not at fault. Photograph the scene if it is safe to do so, and do not arrange any repairs without asking us first.
If the car cannot be used through a fault that is not yours, we will send a replacement if one is available, or refund the unused part of the hire.
